STATUETTE OF A HORSE, END OF THE 7TH CENTURY B.C.
Statuette of a horse, in modeled clay, typical of the beotian productions of the end of the 7th century B.C. The geometrical tradition of that period is reinforced by the parallel ochre and brown lines, partially erased on this examplar.
For related horses see Miklos Szabo, Archaic Terracottas of Beotia, Rome, 1994, p.35f, fig. N°19 and 22. The group of horses with reserved heads is thought to belong to a single workshop - Szabo 1994, p.35 footnote 12-13, and dated to the begining of the 6th century B.C. Beotian terracotta horses were related to the Poseidon cult. Boitos, the son of the horse-like Poiseidon and Melanippe was worshiped by the Beotians as their ancestor.
