LARGE STATUETTE OF ISIS-APHRODITE, EGYPT, ROMAN PERIOD
Large terreacotta statuette representing Isis-Aphrodite a harge headdress over her head with a vegetal crown, represented naked, arms along by her body.
Isis, assimilated with Aphrodite, the Greco-Egyptian goddess of love and fertility. Formerly known as "concubines of the dead", these figurines were placed in tombs to help the deceased to regain his manliness.
Similarly garbed figures of goddesses and female figures associated with marriage, conception, and childbirth are found throughout the Greco-Roman world. The Egyptian version is distinguished by its compressed, frontal, and rather rigidly upright pose, and by its occurrence in burials.
Egypt, roman period.
